Flashback Friday: e.l.f. Cosmetics’ Modern Metals Liquid Matte Lipstick

It’s still winter here in the Northern Hemisphere, but I have fall on my mind. Today, Flashback Friday, I’m sending autumnal vibes your way.

My idea of fall makeup includes a rust or gingerbread-colored lipstick. I’ve been on the hunt for such a shade for a few years now, but no product has quite matched my vision. So imagine my excitement when I came across e.l.f.’s Modern Metals Liquid Matte Lipstick. e.l.f. describes it as a “terracotta nude,” but is it The One?

I really like how Modern Metals swatched on my arm. It screams rust, the color of my dreams.

Review

Modern Metals pulled orange on my lips. Its appearance probably differs based on your skin tone. I must admit I was disappointed that the rust tone on my arm (which is lighter than my face) did not translate to my lips. Its pretty and dark skin friendly, but not exactly what I was looking for.

I like to pair my lippies with a lip liner, so I used MAC’s Chestnut before reapplying Modern Metals. Adding the liner toned down the orange, but not to the point that I could call it a rust-colored shade.

Modern Metals applied comfortably, but my lips felt a bit dry after a few minutes. Given the formula, I highly recommend using a lip balm before applying the lipstick.

Final Thoughts

Sadly, my search for The One continues. Modern Metals retails for $6.00 and you get 0.1 fl. oz. of product. This is a steal, consider it if you’re looking to add a fall-appropriate lipstick to your collection.
